Best AI underwriting software — by job, not by slogan
Credit teams buy an LOS, a spread, document capture, or a memo a CCO will sign. Compare those jobs. SecureLend is the harness beside the LOS you already run.
Credit teams do not buy "AI underwriting." They buy an LOS, a spread, document capture, or a memo a CCO will sign. This guide compares those jobs.
I wrote this for a Head of Underwriting or CCO who already has nCino, Abrigo, Excel, and a Claude or ChatGPT tab open. The question is not who is the best AI. The question is which tool owns which step, and what still lands on a human.
SecureLend's claim is narrow. Package in. Extract and spread. Apply your rubric. Draft a cited memo. You review the work. We do not make the yes/no call. We do not ask you to rip out the LOS.
Start the 7-day Senior Analyst trial if you want to judge a memo, not a category page.
How to read this page
Use the listicle if you are shopping a shortlist. Use the compare hub if you already know the category (full LOS vs AI-native origination vs spreading vs document AI vs a chat harness vs Excel). The matrix is criteria, not a scorecard. We leave claims off when we cannot cite a public product page.
Buying tests we will keep repeating:
Cited memo — every material figure should point at a source page, not a vibe.
Works on any LOS — the harness sits next to the system of record you already paid for.
$220K vs $30K — a fully loaded senior hire vs Senior Analyst at $3,000/mo ($30,000/yr on the annual plan). Indicative U.S. employment cost, not a salary survey.
SOC 2 and your rubric — SOC 2 Type II, audit trail, your credit box. Not a generic model you cannot inspect.
Best AI underwriting software — by job
1. SecureLend — underwriting harness beside the LOS
SecureLend is an analyst harness. The unit of work is a file: borrower package, data room, statements. The unit of output is a cited draft — spread, exceptions, memo — for a qualified human to sign or send back.
Who it is for: CCO, Head of Underwriting, credit managers who already have origination software and still wait on memos.
What it does:
Chase and index the package (what is in the file, what is missing).
Extract and spread to your template.
Apply your rubric, not a mystery score.
Draft the memo with citations. Human approval required.
What it is not: a decision engine. Not a full LOS rip-and-replace. Not "upload and the committee is done."
Economics, from pricing: Senior Analyst is $3,000/mo ($30,000/yr with two months free on annual). The comparison we use is a ~$220K fully loaded senior line. Same models and evidence standard at Junior, Analyst, and Senior; you pay for scope of work, not a smarter answer. 7-day Senior Analyst trial, no card to start.
Best for: shops that want the memo work done without a core-system program.
Honest limit: if you need a new system of record, borrower portal, servicing, and CECL in one contract, that is a different RFP. We also sell an LOS; that is optional and not the lead this month. Most credit teams should try the harness on the stack they have.
2. Claude or ChatGPT — same models, no governed file
This is the real competitor for a lot of desks. An analyst pastes a PDF into Claude or ChatGPT, asks for a memo, and gets fluent prose in minutes.
Strengths: already paid for; good at narrative; fine for a first pass when the file is clean text.
Tradeoffs: no firm rubric unless you paste it every time; citations usually not page-and-line; no system of record; easy to invent a ratio when a table is ugly.
Best for: drafting emails, outlining a memo you will rebuild.
Not best for: the artifact that goes to committee.
SecureLend uses the same class of models. The product is the workflow around them: extract, spread, rubric, cites, human gate.
3. nCino — full LOS, not a memo sidecar
nCino is a cloud loan origination system (Salesforce-based) with generative copilots on top of that system of record.
Keep nCino. Put the harness next to it. If someone is selling you a rip-and-replace to "get AI," ask them what happens to the last five years of loan records.
4. Abrigo — bank lending and risk suite
Abrigo sells lending, credit risk, portfolio, and compliance software aimed at banks and credit unions.
Best for: community banks and CUs that want lending plus risk on one platform.
Not best for: a credit shop that already has an LOS and only wants cited memos faster.
5. Casca (Cascading AI) and Lama AI — AI-native origination
Casca weighted to SMB and SBA origination. Lama markets agentic origination infrastructure.
Best for: lenders shopping a new origination stack.
Not best for: "we like nCino; we hate the three-week memo queue."
6. Ocrolus — document AI and cash-flow analytics
High-volume document capture. Not the full underwriting file. Pair it; do not score it as if it drafted the committee memo.
7. Excel — the baseline that still wins most files
The incumbent is not nCino. It is the analyst's workbook. Any harness has to beat that bar on a real file, with cites and a human gate.
Compare hub — grouped by what the vendor is
Category | Vendors / notes |
|---|---|
Full LOS | nCino, Abrigo (SecureLend LOS not this month’s lead) |
AI-native origination | Casca / Cascading AI, Lama AI |
Spreading | Spreading-only tools — if spread exists and memo still takes a week, you need a harness |
Document AI | Ocrolus; Claude/ChatGPT file upload |
Manual | Excel |
Underwriting harness | SecureLend (work alongside LOS); Claude/ChatGPT as agents = same models, no governed file |
Underwriting harness (work alongside the LOS)
SecureLend — extract, spread, rubric, cited memo. Deploy next to the LOS you have. ICP is CCO / Head of UW. Time-to-first-memo: 7-day Senior Analyst trial. Start free.
Claude / ChatGPT as a harness — same models, no governed file.
Comparison matrix (criteria, not scores)
Empty praise cells would be dishonest. This is a shopping map, not a leaderboard. No score table. Compare by job:
Architecture | Cites and audit | Beside the LOS | ICP | Time-to-first-memo | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
SecureLend | Analyst harness on the file | Page-level cites; human gate; SOC 2 Type II | Yes — keep nCino / Abrigo / yours | CCO / Head of UW | 7-day Senior Analyst trial |
Claude / ChatGPT | Chat window | Usually narrative only | No SoR | Anyone with a tab | Minutes of prose; days to rebuild |
nCino | Full LOS + copilots | LOS audit on the record | It is the LOS | Bank / CU origination | Core program, not a memo trial |
Abrigo | Lending + risk suite | Platform controls | Often the stack | Community banks / CUs | Platform rollout |
Casca / Lama | AI-native origination | Vendor-specific | Often replace / new stack | Lenders shopping a new LOS | New-stack program |
Ocrolus | Document AI / cash flow | Doc-level capture | Pair with LOS | High-volume intake | Capture first; memo still human |
Excel | Manual workbook | Whatever the analyst typed | Beside everything | Every shop | Same day; no cites by default |
Architecture — harness vs chat vs full LOS vs document layer vs workbook
Cites and audit — can you click a number and land on a source page
Deployment alongside the LOS — sidecar vs rip-and-replace
ICP — CCO / Head of UW vs origination-platform buyer vs document shop
Time-to-first-memo — trial week vs implementation program vs analyst calendar
FAQ
Does SecureLend replace nCino?
No. Keep nCino (or Abrigo, or the LOS you have). SecureLend is the work-alongside underwriting harness.
What should a CCO actually buy?
Buy the job you are missing. If the LOS is fine and the memo is late, buy the harness. If you have no system of record, that is a different RFP.
Can AI replace the underwriter?
No. The agent does the mechanical first pass. Exceptions, structure, and the signature stay human. The memo is a draft, not a decision.
How do we evaluate cites?
Open one completed draft. Click a number. Land on a page in the source file. If you cannot do that, it is not ready for committee.
Why $220K vs $30K?
Senior Analyst is $3,000/mo, $30,000/yr on the published annual plan. The $220K figure is an indicative fully loaded U.S. senior hire. Pricing.
Is this SOC 2?
SOC 2 Type II completed. Trust report.
How do I try it?
7-day Senior Analyst trial, no card: securelend.ai/agents-chat. Put the next file in. Judge the memo.
